Kim MonochromePosted by Paul Wright (Wiltshire, United Kingdom) on 14 March 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio. Another shot of my great friend Kim. Technique Taken in subdued light (just inside the opening to a barn). Converted to black and white with the Channel Mixer option in Photoshop. Then lots and lots of dodging and burning. Don't be scared to make mistakes. Just save separate files on a regular basis. Call them 'restore points' for want of a better expression. Keep the exposure setting low and apply 'many' times rather than trying to get the required shade immediately. It's a far more subtle effect. Don't go crazy! It's a naturalistic effect your looking for. Look hard at whats already there then enhance that. Don't 'imagine' an eye, or lips etc looking a certain way. Every face is different.....................that's the beauty of portraiture! Most of all enjoy. Shot taken with a Canon 10D (digital) in RAW. ISO 100. I'd be lying if I said I could remember the f stop, shutter speed etc. 5.6 at 60th sec (handheld) would be a good guess! I tend to under expose with digital so as to not burn the highlights out.............so, you can be pretty sure it was under exposed :-)
